On Saturday, January 3, the Illawarra Hawks proudly celebrated the success of our Local Heroes Campaign, recognising the incredible volunteers who make a lasting difference across the Illawarra community.
Through the campaign, members of the community were invited to nominate everyday heroes who go above and beyond in service of others. We were honoured to acknowledge the outstanding individuals nominated by their peers, including:
- Grant Plecas – Corrimal Cougars Volunteer
- Jonah Kaiser – Surf Life Saver
- Kelly McCrea – Firefighter
- Lisa Almond – Paramedic
- Steven Hofman – Police Officer
- Tara Prasad – Firefighter

We extend our congratulations to all nominees and proudly recognise Paramedic Anthony Nguyen as the campaign winner, following multiple nominations from members of the wider community.
Anthony has served the Illawarra region for more than 15 years as a paramedic, often working shift hours that require personal sacrifice, including missing important family moments, in order to serve and protect the community. Inspired by the loss of a close friend, Anthony committed his life to helping others and supporting families during their most difficult times.
Beyond his work as a paramedic, Anthony founded Illawarra First Aid Services, volunteering his days off to provide medical and first-aid support at local schools, sporting events, carnivals and community gatherings.
Described by those who nominated him as selfless, humble and deeply committed to the safety of others, Anthony is a proud Oak Flats local and a devoted husband and father to four children — Zen, Raven, Rafa and Rocco.
The Illawarra Hawks thank Anthony, all nominees, and every volunteer across our region for their unwavering commitment to making the Illawarra a stronger, safer and more connected community.
Stronger. Louder. Together.
