"Lee for Three!”: Hyunjung Lee Departs Hawks for Japan Opportunity

Hyunjung “HJ” Lee, has officially concluded his time in the Gong, with the remaining year of his contract bought out by a Japanese club—ending a memorable and mutually rewarding chapter in Wollongong.
The South Korean sharpshooter became more than just a player off the bench—he became a spark plug, a fan favourite, and, ultimately, a championship contributor. Known for his lightning-quick release from deep and innate feel for the game, Lee’s presence stretched defences well beyond the arc. Even on the nights he wasn’t lighting it up, his gravity created space for others.
Over 69 games in the red and charcoal, he averaged 7.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists, connecting on 38% of his three-point attempts. But it wasn’t just the stats that left a mark—it was the moments. Timely offensive boards, momentum-swinging triples, and a career-high 24-point outburst that had WIN Entertainment Centre in full voice: “LEE FOR THREE!”
HJ’s time in Illawarra wasn’t just about buckets—it was about buy-in. For two seasons, Lee embodied everything a Hawks clubman could be. He was the last to leave the stands post-game, chatting, posing for selfies, and sometimes needing a gentle reminder from staff that Coach Tatum was ready for the team huddle. It became something of a running joke—HJ giving fans all the time in the world while the locker room waited.
The Hawks and Lee part ways on excellent terms, a reflection of the mutual respect forged during his time here. As General Manager Mat Campbell put it, “He’ll always be welcomed back. An outstanding human and one of the nicest clubmen we’ve ever had.”
Lee now joins the growing list of Hawks talent headed to Japan, following in the footsteps of All-NBL First Teamers Gary Clark (2024) and Trey Kell (2025). It’s a move earned through effort, resilience, and a constant commitment to improvement. His next chapter promises greater opportunity and more playing time—a natural next step for a young international ready for more.
For the Hawks faithful, it’s farewell (for now) to a player who captured hearts with his humility and flair. From Seoul to the South Coast, HJ Lee was, and will always be, one of us.
