The nominees for the the Hungry Jack’s NBL new look Next Generation Award have been announced, and Hawks’ favourite and co-captain Sam Froling is in the running.
The Next Generation Award was announced mid-January as a replacement for the existing “Rookie of the Year” award, allowing future stars to be recognised with greater transparency.
All players under the age of 25 on April 30th of the year of conclusion of the relevant season are eligible to win the award, thus creating a wider pool of eligible players.
Although this season has seen the Hawks end with a disappointing result, Froling has had an impressive performance throughout.
Starting his fourth season with the Hawks on a high note, the young talent was promoted to the position of co-captain with seasoned international talent Tyler Harvey, where he has embraced the additional leadership responsibility.
Consistently showing that he can have a major influence on the Hawks game, all season Froling has used his strong 213cm frame to dominate in the key and put up shots.
He doesn’t just do it on the NBL court though. Froling has also suited up for the Boomers in a total of four campaigns, where in the team’s most recent match up against Kazakhstan he led all scorers with an 18-point, 11 rebound double-double.
As one of only four players in NBL23 to average at least 14 points and eight rebounds, Froling is a strong contender for the award.
