Illawarra Hawks most recent import guard, Peyton Siva, arrived in Wollongong on Tuesday morning ready for business.
Averaging 11.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game with his former team, the New Zealand Breakers, Siva is excited to be back in Australia and a part of the NBL for a second season.
“I was very excited to get the call. I spoke to a couple of guys from the team and I’ve heard nothing but great things, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing with them.”
Siva’s signing was announced last week after an extensive search for a replacement for the injured Justin Robinson, who went down in round one of the Hungry Jack’s NBL23 season.
“They told me they needed someone to come in and help take charge and make the right plays. I’m here to do what I can to help the guys out and get some wins under our belt before the upcoming break in November.”
Head Coach Jacob Jackomas sees Siva solidifying the Hawks backcourt rotation and relieving some of the pressure they have been under with Robinson’s absence.
“I’m here to get guys in the right spots and control the tempo of the game. I know the team had some really close games early on that came down to the last few minutes, so my job is it be an anchor and help the guys make good shots at the end of the games.”
With the Hawks having lost their last four games, Siva is confident the team can turn things around.
“In this league if you can string 5 or 6 wins in a row, you’re back towards the top of the leader board. We have an experienced team, so we know what it takes.”
Siva will suit up for tonight’s away match in Brisbane against the Bullets but he’s excited to experience the atmosphere Hawks fans are known for creating.
“I’m looking forward to getting out there. I’ve heard so much about the fans here, so I’m looking forward to playing a home game to see what they’re all about.”
Hawks fans can see Siva in action the next home game when the Hawks play Melbourne United at 5:30pm on Saturday, October 29th. Tickets available via Ticketmaster.
