Phil Driscoll, affectionately known as “Uncle Phil” to the Illawarra Hawks community, has been awarded an Order of Australia today in recognition of his decades of exemplary volunteer work and dedication to the Illawarra Community. A true local legend, Phil is no stranger to the region or its sporting arenas, where he tirelessly supported our hometown heroes for generations.
Particularly for the Illawarra Hawks Basketball Club, from day one, Phil has worn many hats (including Santa for the club) - considered widely as the Team Manager, he has done everything, from team strapper to water boy and often lending his medical expertise, but his contributions extend far beyond his tangible roles. He’s a father figure, a confidant, and a source of both humour and wisdom. Whether it's navigating a problem or celebrating a win, Uncle Phil is the rock for everyone in the club - players, coaches, staff, and even ownership.
“He’s weathered every storm and celebrated every victory with us,” shared Joe Tertzakian, General Manager of Basketball Operations and one of Phil’s close friends. “Phil’s willingness to step in and fill any gap, combined with his unwavering values and commitment to creating an elite environment, has made him an irreplaceable part of the Illawarra Hawks family.”
Phil’s experience and deep understanding of the balance between professional sports and small-town roots has a profound impact felt throughout the community.
Stuart Taggart, CEO of the Illawarra Hawks shared, “Phil offers comfort and clarity to everyone he meets. His impact has been felt across all levels of the club from locker room to the front office, he continues to pave a legacy that will inspire past, present and future generations.”
An Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Phil Driscoll embodies this sentiment and both the Illawarra Hawks community, and the Illawarra region are deeply grateful to Phil for his tireless contributions. His unparalleled dedication makes him the perfect candidate for this honour and a true role model for us all.
From the Illawarra Hawks community, we congratulate you Phil and say thank you.
