Fletcher Macdonald

Fletcher MacDonald has been in this building before he ever put a Hawks jersey on again. His father Dene MacDonald captained the club, 194 games between 1989 and 1997, 11th on the all-time appearances list, and now stands on the Basketball Illawarra NBL1 East bench as an assistant coach. Fletcher's own path away from Wollongong and back to it has been longer than a lot of local stories get to be, and it's brought him home carrying more than just a surname.

A Long Way Round To Get Home

It started, briefly, in NBL1 East with Illawarra in 2022, 15 games before he left for the United States. Two years at Lubbock Christian University in Texas came first. Then a move to Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he finished a Computer Science degree in 2026 while turning himself into a legitimate two-way forward: 49 blocks across his two seasons there, good for 7th in program history, and a senior year that read 9.0 points and 5.7 rebounds a game in just 22.8 minutes on 57.9 per cent shooting. He came home to NBL1 East in 2026 before Illawarra brought him back into the fold on a development contract for NBL27, pending league approval.

The Surgery, And The Charge That Followed

A scaphoid fracture on 11 June 2026 needed surgery and should have cost him most of the winter. Instead he was back playing five weeks later, on 11 July, and in his first game back he took a charge. Not a bucket, not a highlight. A charge, the least glamorous play in the sport, taken by a guy barely off the operating table. It's the single clearest piece of evidence for what MacDonald says about himself: "I am a guy who will always give maximum effort whenever I'm on the floor."

Guard Eyes, Forward's Frame

At 203 centimetres, MacDonald's official position is forward, capable of playing the five in stretches, but his background as a point guard shows up in how he reads the floor: a defensive-minded, effort-first player who can space the floor rather than just occupy it. He's the second son of a former Hawk to make this roster, after Dominique Cooks in 2014/15, and by a strange coincidence he and Cooks both went through the same college in Honolulu on their way here.
