You don't forget a player who helped deliver a championship. Illawarra didn't. Darius Days is back for NBL27, and the fact that it needed saying at all tells you how far he'd travelled to get here.

Since leaving Illawarra with a ring on his finger, Days has been almost everywhere: Shanghai first, then Puerto Rico with Atléticos de San Germán, then Japan's B1 League with San-en NeoPhoenix, then a brief stint in the Philippines. A basketball career lived out of a suitcase, four countries in under two years, the kind of stretch that either wears a player down or sharpens him. On the evidence of what he gave the Hawks the first time round, Wollongong is betting on the latter.

What He Left Behind

The NBL25 championship season is the reason this signing writes itself. Days averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds a game that year, shooting 33.3 per cent from three, an inside-outside combination that gave Illawarra a big man who could punish teams on the glass and still stretch the floor when the shot clock demanded it. Mat Campbell, the club's Chief Operations Officer of Basketball, put it plainly on confirming the return: "Darius gave us rebounding and outside shooting when we needed it most."

The Fan Favourite Clause

Some signings are made purely on a spreadsheet. This one wasn't. Days built a genuine connection with Hawkheads during the title run, the kind of popularity that doesn't show up in a box score but matters to a club rebuilding its identity around the community that turns up every home game at WIN Entertainment Centre. Bringing him home isn't just a basketball decision. It's a statement about what NBL27 is supposed to feel like.
