The Illawarra Hawks have signed Queensland wing Amarco Doyle on a 2+1 contract, with the 21-year-old beginning his Hawks journey as a development player before stepping onto the main roster.
The signing continues the Hawks' growing First Nations player pathway, bringing another genuine talent into the program from a state that continues to produce some of the country's most exciting young basketballers. Doyle, who recently turned 21, joins the Hawks off the back of a standout junior and collegiate career, and arrives with the kind of three-level scoring and defensive intensity that will have Hawks fans excited for what's ahead.

A pathway built on hard work
Doyle's road to Wollongong has taken him through some of the toughest development environments in the game. A product of The Southport School, he represented Queensland at the Australian Junior Championships, claiming silver at the 2024 Under-20 Nationals along the way.
From there, Doyle headed to the United States to test himself in the collegiate system, spending time at the College of Southern Idaho, where as a sophomore he averaged 14.8 points a game and shot an outstanding 50 per cent from three-point range, earning Region 18 All-Star 5 honours for the 2024–25 season. That form saw him commit to New Mexico State for the 2025–26 campaign.
He has built a strong NBL1 résumé along the way too, playing a key role in the 2024 NBL1 North Championship win and earning Under-23 Youth Player of the Year honours that season, before a stint with the Mt Gambier Pioneers in NBL1 South in 2025.
Back home and on fire
Doyle returned to Queensland for the 2026 NBL1 North season, signing with the Cairns Marlins under Hawks Assistant Coach and Marlins NBL1 Head Coach Joel Khalu, lining up alongside fellow Hawks-aligned talents Luca Yates and Kobe McDowell-White.
It has been a productive return. Through the season so far, Doyle is averaging 19.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.7 blocks, knocking down 2.5 threes a night, numbers that speak to a genuine three-level scorer capable of putting pressure on a defence in multiple ways.
What Khalu said
Hawks Assistant Coach Joel Khalu, who has worked closely with Doyle for years, says the Hawks are getting a player who already knows what it takes to compete at the highest level.
"I've coached Amarco for a number of years now, both in NBL1 and with the Queensland Under-20 program, so I've had a front-row seat to his development. He's exactly the type of player Hawks fans will love. He's hardworking, blue-collar, tough, and an ultra-competitive person who impacts winning in so many ways. Offensively, he has a skill set that will translate well to the NBL. He's a genuine three-level scorer who can create his own shot, knock down the three, and put pressure on the rim. His ability to space the floor will open things up for everyone around him. I've got no doubt he'll embrace the opportunity and make the most of it."
The road ahead
Doyle's signing adds another genuine talent to the Hawks' ever-growing First Nations pathway, a program that continues to give young Australians from every corner of the country a place to develop and a stage to show what they can do. With a 2+1 deal in hand and his development season ahead of him, Wollongong will be watching closely as he looks to follow the trail blazed by those who have come through the program before him.
