Makur Maker sets the pace
Ten games, ten votes, nine different winners. Makur Maker leads with two. Eight Hawks sit one behind him.
Maker landed from the USA on Friday 2nd October and made his debut two days later at John Cain Arena. Six games on, he has won the fan vote in two of them.
The first came after our 91-89 win over Melbourne United on Sunday 18th October, when he scored 23 points and hit the go-ahead three with a minute to play. The second came four days later against Sydney, where he scored a new career high of 24 on 9 of 12 shooting. Those two games followed 18 points against Cairns on Sunday 11th October, so he set a new NBL career high in three straight games.
He plays above the rim, too. If you want to watch a Maker dunk from the closest seat in the house, Hollywood Seats put you courtside at WIN Entertainment Centre.
Eight Hawks, one award each
The spread is the story. Here is how the first eight winners got there:
- William “Davo” Hickey opened the account after the opener against the Breakers with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
- Johny Narkle took the vote after the Friday 25th September trip to Brisbane, a 103-95 loss at Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Justin Tatum started him in the second half, and he blocked Brisbane’s first possession straight away. He finished with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting, 9 of them after half time, and a team-best +12 while he was on court.
- Kyle Adnam won it after Sydney on Sunday 27th September. He came off the bench and scored 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including three triples, in a 121-100 loss.
- Kelan Martin scored a career-high 28 on Friday 2nd October, our first win of the season at home against Adelaide.
- Milton Doyle handed out 11 assists against the Phoenix.
- Daniel Grida won it on effort and energy. He scored nine points on 3 of 3 against the JackJumpers, but the vote was for how he played. He was relentless, and despite the loss we outscored Tasmania by 22 in his 16 minutes. It’s the all-out effort that has become his trademark, including diving on every loose ball.
- Sam Froling posted 16 points and 12 rebounds against Cairns.
- Todd Blanchfield is the most recent. He scored 19 points off the bench against Brisbane on Saturday 24th October, in just his second game back from a month out with a broken wrist.
Hawkheads vote for the fight
At 2-8, the season hasn't started how we planned. But the voting pattern says a lot about how you watch. Hawkheads are rewarding the player who changed the game, not the one who simply filled the box score.
Saturday night showed why. We trailed Brisbane by 20 at half-time, then won the third quarter 27-14 to cut the gap to three in a Blanchfield inspired run, and the Sandpit came to its feet. If you have mates who have never felt a third quarter like that live, general admission tickets start from $30.
Still waiting on the board
Tyler Harvey, Wani Swaka Lo Buluk and Lamar Patterson have yet to get on the board. All three have been in the mix. With 23 games still to play, there is plenty of room to move.
Your vote does not stop on the road
Voting runs after every game, home and away. Greater Bank, the Hawks’ Major Community Partner, presents it each time - One lucky winner will win a Hawks cap after each game - every voter goes into the main prize draw.
The next vote opens after Perth on Saturday 31st October at 9:30pm, the first of five straight away games.
We are back at WIN Entertainment Centre on Thursday 19th November, when Adelaide visit for Indigenous Round. Every game is live on ESPN Disney+, so you can vote from the couch.
BE ONE OF US TOO
Eleven home games are still to come at WIN Entertainment Centre. A Flexi membership covers three or five of them, the best value for money way to be in the Sandpit for the run home, because the moments worth voting for are better from your own seat.
STRONGER. LOUDER. TOGETHER.
