Illawarra Hawks power forward Deng Deng has been an integral part of the team this season, averaging over 24 minutes per game played.
Known for his defensive character, the experienced 6’8 signed with the Hawks in June, where he played 39 games in NBL21 before spending last season with the Brisbane Bullets.
Head Coach Jacob Jackomas had seen Deng’s improvement as a player over the previous seasons and wanted him on side this season to take on a bigger role in the team.
And take on a bigger role he has – the versatile forward has suited up for every game this season, averaged over 24 minutes on court, 8.7 points and 6.5 boards.
A force to be reckoned with, Deng showed his dominance when he put up a strong contender for “Dunk of the Year” by driving hard to the basket and posterising Melbourne United’s Chris Humphries.
In early January the Hawks clashed against Adelaide’s 36ers where Deng has his game of the season with an impressive 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 19 points
Deng is confident in his ability as a player.
“I believe in myself. I’ve put in the hard work, and I know that the coaches and my teammates all believe in me too.”
Although the season hasn’t gone quite to plan for the Hawks, they haven’t gone down without a fight.
“One thing about us is that we’re always going to play hard – no matter whether we’re playing at home or away”.
With NBL23 coming to an end for the Hawks, fans can rest easy knowing that the team have learnt from the experience and plan to work hard in the off season.
“As tough as this season was, we’ve learnt a lot. I know the off season will consist of a lot of hard work from all the guys, because I know that none of us want to be in this position again.”
Head down to WIN Entertainment Centre and see Deng dunk for yourself in person when the Hawks’ play their final game of the season at home on Saturday evening.
Tip off is at 5:30pm and tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
