The Illawarra Hawks fly west for a Round 3 showdown with the Perth Wildcats on Thursday night, looking to bounce back after a narrow opening-round loss to the JackJumpers.
It will be a clash of the titans in the paint, with Hawks superstar and three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee squaring off against Wildcats anchor Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. Both are already stamping their authority on NBL26: McGee produced an incredible 32 points (15/20 fgs), 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while Lual-Acuil Jr. has been just as vital for Perth, putting up 18 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game across the opening two games.
While the matchup of big men will grab headlines, the Hawks’ backcourt could be the X-factor. JaQuori McLaughlin, who torched the Wildcats for 24 points in the NBL Blitz, will be crucial in setting the tone, while captain Tyler Harvey (19 ppg) remains Illawarra’s perimeter weapon.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, are adjusting to life without long-time star Bryce Cotton, who moved to Adelaide in the offseason. After dropping their home opener to Tasmania, Perth steadied with an impressive 89–78 win over the Breakers on the road, setting them at 1–1 on the season.
For the Hawks, this game is about making a statement that the title defence is alive and well. A road win in Perth would be a perfect way to kick-start the campaign before heading across the ditch to face the Breakers next Wednesday before returning home to face Brisbane on October 11.
Tip-off is 9:30pm AEST on Thursday night, live on ESPN.
