The Illawarra Hawks are proud to announce a two year partnership extension with Reclaim the Game.
Launched in October 2020, Reclaim the Game is an awareness initiative delivered in partnership with NSW sporting clubs to counteract the saturation of sports betting advertising.
Participating clubs agree not to take on betting sponsors or show betting ads at their home games, as well as raise awareness about gambling harm and safer betting.
The program also aims to help people understand their choices and decisions about gambling and encourages them to take action to prevent and reduce gambling harm and seek support when they need it.
The partnerships have been successful in raising fan’s awareness of where to seek support, with Reclaim the Game’s annual survey showing 29 per cent awareness of the GambleAware helpline across all partnerships in 2024, compared to 22 per cent in 2023.
The initiative reminds fans they can enjoy watching their team without spending their hard-earned money on betting.
The Sydney Kings and Sydney Flames have also announced a two year partnership extension with Reclaim the Game.
Aaron Anderson, General Manager Commercial said:
“The Illawarra Hawks are proud to continue our partnership with Reclaim the Game and stand alongside the Sydney Kings and Sydney Flames, in creating a safer, more positive sporting environment. By extending our partnership, we’re sending a clear message, basketball is about community, competition, and passion - not gambling. This initiative empowers fans to enjoy the game for what it truly is, while raising awareness about the support available through GambleAware.”
Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris said:
“I am pleased to announce the NSW Government has extended the Reclaim the Game partnerships with the Sydney Kings, Sydney Flames and Illawarra Hawks,” Mr Harris said.
“The initiative is designed to reduce the amount of sports betting advertising that fans are exposed to and raise awareness around the risks associated with gambling and where to get help if needed.
“These partnerships have helped us spread this important message through reclaiming advertising space and enlisting clubs to engage with fans and the community on responsible gambling.”
