The Hawks clinched their spot in the NBL24 Finals Series with a home victory over the Perth Wildcats on Thursday night, but today's match still holds relevance for where the side will play in week one of the play-in tournament.
A win today would see the Hawks secure fourth spot and a date with the JackJumpers. A loss against United, and we will await the result of the New Zealand and 36ers game later this afternoon to see if we hold onto fourth or return home for a five vs. six play-in qualifier.
Justin Tatum promised the Illawarra faithful that if they showed up, his side would show out, and the squad delivered on that promise in spades on their home floor against the Wildcats.
After trailing by two points at half-time, the Hawks used a 32-point second term to lead the rest of the way before running out 108-92 winners.
The home side dominated on the boards 57-35, including 20 on the offensive end, an indication of the effort and desire the squad has played with in recent times.
United have had the Hawks measure in NBL24, and today's match provides the perfect platform to control their destiny and hit the Finals Series in form and with momentum.
Opposition Watch
Melbourne United have been the benchmark all season and will take the number-one seed into the playoffs.
The star-studded United side will be smarting after going down at the hands of Cairns on Friday night, and the Hawks' defence will be on high alert for a response.
United are expected to dominate the NBL Awards on Monday night, with Chris Goulding, Jo Lual-Acuil and Shae Ili all names to watch.
Both sides can go 8-10 deep on any given night and look for Cameron, Bowen, Krebs, and the veteran Newley to test the guard and wing depth of the Hawks.
Dean Vickerman has match-winners and championship experience at every position and will hold home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
