Illawarra Hawks to be GambleAware in NBL24
Reclaim the Game is an awareness campaign to challenge the normalisation of sports betting and advertising and raise community awareness about the risks of gambling.
Research shows online sports betting is the fastest-growing form of gambling, with basketball being one of the most popular sports to bet on in NSW.
Research has also found almost 50 per cent of 12–17-year-olds see gambling advertising on television during sports and racing every week.
This exciting new partnership will be visible in stadium, online and through the delivery of educational programs, and will involve the club working with GambleAware for the next two NBL seasons.
General Manager of Commercial Sam Attrill said the club welcomed the opportunity to educate their players, members and fans about the risks associated with gambling.
“This partnership reinforces our renewed commitment to the community and supports our mission to make Illawarra a better place through basketball. We are thrilled to align with the Reclaim the Game message for the NBL24 season and beyond,” said Mr Attrill.
“We are committed to delivering a safe, inclusive, and entertaining match day, and our joint activity with Reclaim the Game will play a meaningful role in educating the community on the risks associated with sports betting and gambling.”
“We look forward to welcoming our members, fans, and partners to WIN Entertainment Centre this season to enjoy the excitement of Hawks basketball with family and friends without the distraction of betting.”
For GambleAware, the partnership will see basketball as one of the first sports in the state to cover all professional teams supporting the Reclaim the Game message.
Liquor & Gaming NSW Policy and Programs Acting Executive Director, Natalie Wright said the Reclaim the Game partnerships with the Illawarra Hawks and Sydney Kings allowed fans to watch the game and barrack for their favourite clubs, with less distraction from sports betting advertising.
“We are pleased to see the collective commitment to Reclaim the Game, which challenges the normalisation of sports betting and advertising in sport,” Ms Wright said.
"For all NSW-based NBL teams to take this stand sends a powerful message, especially to younger fans."
"You can watch and enjoy basketball for the action, rather than the odds."
