The Illawarra Hawks came together to celebrate the 2025/26 NBL season at the club’s annual MVP Ball. A night recognising the players, staff, volunteers and wider community who continue to shape the heartbeat of HawkNation.
While the season delivered plenty of memorable moments on the court, the evening was a reminder that the strength of the Hawks extends far beyond the game itself.
The night’s highest honour, the Most Valuable Player Award, was presented to JaVale McGee, whose presence, professionalism and impact anchored the Hawks throughout the season.
Having reached his 150th game for the Hawks this NBL Regular Season, Daniel Grida enjoyed a standout evening, taking home the Players’ Player Award as voted by his teammates, along with Most Improved Player, recognition of the growth, consistency and competitiveness he brought every night.
Wani Swaka Lo Buluk was once again acknowledged as one of the competition’s elite defenders, claiming Defensive Player of the Year after another season defined by relentless effort and defensive leadership.
The Coach’s Award was presented to Mason Peatling, whose selfless team-first approach and professionalism embodied the standards Head Coach Justin Tatum expects of the group.
Off the court contributions were equally celebrated.
One-to-watch, Development Players, Kobe McDowell-White received the Community Award after contributing more than 70 hours of individual community engagement across the Illawarra. From delivering the Greater Bank Mental Fitness program to hundreds of students, to holiday camps and school visits, Kobe’s energy and genuine connection with young fans made a lasting impact.
The Club Person of the Year Award was presented to Kumar Manix, whose dedication behind the scenes touches nearly every part of the organisation. From assisting game-day presentation and club events to late-night pack downs and supporting players settling into Wollongong, Kumar’s professionalism, reliability and positivity make the club a better place every day.
A respected figure within the Hawks family, Bob Purcell was honoured with the Phil Driscoll OAM Volunteer of the Year Award. For over 13 years Bob has led the floor wiping team. Coordinating volunteers, ensuring player safety and earning league-wide praise, regularly recognised by the NBL as the best in the competition.
The club also proudly celebrated Tory Lavalle, who received a NSW Government Community Service Award, presented by the Hon. Paul Scully MP, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Member for Wollongong. The award, signed off by the Premier, recognises individuals who significantly improve the quality of life within their community, a fitting acknowledgement of Tory’s long-standing commitment to the Illawarra.
Several significant career milestones were recognised throughout the evening, including:
- Todd Blanchfield – 450 NBL Games (Round 9 vs Sydney Kings) — becoming just the 32nd player in league history to reach the mark
- Wani Swaka Lo Buluk – 200 NBL Games (Round 15 vs Cairns Taipans)
- Will “Davo” Hickey – 100 NBL Games (Round 9 vs Sydney Kings)
- Daniel Grida – 150 NBL Games (13 February 2026 vs Sydney Kings)
The MVP Ball once again highlighted what makes the Illawarra Hawks unique — a club built on people, pride and community. From players and coaches to volunteers and fans, every contribution plays a role in the journey forward.
A special thanks to the SAGE Hotel, Wollongong for hosting this year's event.
