The Freeway Series Ignites: Hawks Hunt for Post-Season Survival!
Hawkheads, strap yourselves in because the Freeway Series is officially hitting fever pitch! After a clinical dismantling of the Brisbane Bullets on Monday night, our boys are officially back on the prowl.
The destiny of that final play-in tournament spot is firmly in our hands. While the "experts" wrote us off weeks ago, this group has shown a championship heart that refuses to quit. We head into Qudos Bank Arena knowing that a win against the Kings doesn't just mean bragging rights; it's a massive statement that the reigning champs are ready to defend the throne.
The Matchup
- Ladder: Kings: 18-9 (3rd), Hawks: 10-16 (7th)
- Season Series: Sydney leads 2–0.
- RD14 (Dec 25): Sydney def. Illawarra 108–84 in a Christmas nightmare where we were missing Tyler Harvey.
- RD9 (Nov 16): Sydney def. Illawarra 98–71 in a record-breaking turnover game at the Sandpit.
- Battle of the Titans: This is the league's best FG% team (Kings, 47.2%) going up against the league's premier paint protectors.
Scouting the Kings
- Kendric Davis: In absolute MVP form, Davis is averaging a massive 23.5 PPG and 6.3 APG.
- Xavier Cooks: The Illawarra junior and former MVP remains a monstrous impact player, leading Sydney in rebounds (6.9) and blocks (1.2).
- Torrey Craig: The newly arrived NBA veteran is on a heater from deep, averaging 19.0 PPG and providing elite versatility to a loaded roster.
- Perimeter Threat: The Kings are a dangerous long-range squad, hitting 10.3 triples per game (2nd in NBL).
Keys to Victory
- Frontcourt Dominance: The Hawks lead the NBL in rebounds, blocks, and points in the paint. JaVale McGee (20.1 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.9 BPG) and Sam Froling (13.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG) must utilize their one-two punch to crush Sydney's interior.
- Harvey’s Return to Form: Captain Tyler Harvey is officially back! He was clinical against Brisbane, dropping a dominant 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists with a perfect zero turnovers. When he orchestrates with that level of poise, we are always in with a chance.
- Grida’s Relentless Energy: Daniel Grida continues to be the ultimate spark plug. Even with a bleeding nose against the Bullets, his relentless motor produced multiple fast-break finishes, 13 points, and a crucial second-unit surge.
- Protect the Rock: While both teams dish out 20.3 assists per game, Sydney is league-best at protecting the ball (9.0 TOs). We must cut down our 14.0 turnovers to avoid giving their shooters extra looks.
- Perimeter Lockdown: Spearheaded by Wani Swaka Lo Buluk and Daniel Grida, our perimeter defensive rotation must replicate their elite intensity to disrupt a Kings offense that thrives on efficiency.
- Milestone Watch: Quentin "QJ" Peterson (15.9 PPG) has hit at least 3 triples in six consecutive games-look for him to light it up from deep!
