Ahead of tonight’s game against NBL24 nemesis Melbourne United, the Illawarra Hawks are excited to announce the re-signing of Guard William ‘Davo’ Hickey on a three-year contract.
Having first joined the Hawks as a development player for the NBL 2022/23 Season, Davo progressed strongly and was upgraded to a full contract prior to the seasons end.
A fan favourite, who had significant impact on the Hawks' rise in the backend of NBL24 and the side's fast start to NBL25.
“It’s the first extended contract in my career, so it feels like all that hard work, all that sacrifice over all those years has been worth it,” Hickey said.
It’s all just been an accumulation of years of basketball just coming together. he said.
Knowing the club respects and sees what I’ve been doing is a massive thing for me. I’m just really excited to be here for the next couple of years, to have that security, and start setting some things up in my own life and career,” he added.
Hickey is a proud First Nations man, and his extension, following Kobe McDowell-White’s signing as a development player in The Hawks new pathway for First Nations athletes, is another step in the Club’s continuing commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players and the community.
“Davo has become a huge part of our team and plays an important role both on and off the court,” said Coach Justin Tatum. “His passion is there for everyone to see, and the team loves that just like the fans do.”
“He has worked tirelessly during my time coaching with him to prove himself not only to me, but to his teammates. I can rely on him to do his job and support the team, and he is really contributing to our current success.”
“I am looking forward to seeing what he can do with his time locked in at the Hawks. He is a great player and has a long career ahead of him,” Tatum added.
Get down to WIN Entertainment Centre tonight to cheer on Davo and the squad as they take on our NBL24 rivals Melbourne United. Tip off 7:30 pm.
Tickets still available at Ticketmaster now.
