The Illawarra Hawks and Max Darling have mutually agreed to part ways.
Darling made 17 appearances for the Hawks during the 2021/21 NBL season, averaging just over five minutes per contest, but is on the lookout for bigger opportunities.
“The people of Wollongong welcomed me with open arms and I will look back at my one season at the Hawks fondly. I got to spend a year learning my craft under Goorj [Brian Goorjian] and working out with some really talented players, but all I really want is more opportunity. So I wish the Hawks all the best and hope they bring the Illawarra region another title soon," Max Darling said.
“Max was the consummate professional last season and a great young guy to have around the group. Whenever his number was called he gave it his all, and his effort at practice and his support of his teammates was first class," Illawarra Hawks coach Brian Goorjian said.
“I wish Max all the best on the next step of his basketball journey. He's still developing his game but he's athletic for his size and he's got a great attitude so I hope he lands on his feet and prospers from here on out,” Goorjian said.

Darling joined the Hawks after two seasons in Croatia and had previously represented New Zealand at junior level.
"It's never easy, saying goodbye to a player, and this is no exception. We thank Max for his contribution and hope the best is still to come for him. I think we all agree this is the best outcome for the club and the individual as we all strive for bigger and better accomplishments," Illawarra Hawks President Dorry Kordahi said.
Darling is currently playing for the Canterbury Rams in the NZNBL.
