Mat Campbell Steps Into New Role At Hawks

Former Hawks captain and club legend, Mat Campbell, has made the tough decision to step down from his role as General Manager of the Hawks, opting to stay on as a club ambassador as well as establishing a Hawks Advisory Panel.

During Campbell’s two and a half years at the helm, the Hawks pioneered the first Indigenous game in the NBL, took the NBL back to Canberra for the first time in ten years and signed NBA draft prospect LaMelo Ball. Prior to that, he was the instrumental driving force behind the ‘Save the Hawks’ campaign in 2009, played for the club for 17 seasons and co-captained the Hawks 2001 championship-winning team.

Of his decision, Campbell stated, “The past two and a half years have been rewarding both personally and professionally. When I started in the role, the club was in dire straits. It needed a sustainable model to ensure the long-term viability of the club and my objective was to make sure that the club remains in the Illawarra for another 40 years – which our new ownership group can do. I am incredibly proud to have achieved everything I set out to do as General Manager. The Hawks will always hold a special place in my heart however, I am excited to see what Goorj can do with the team.”

Hawks President and co-owner Dorry Kordahi stated, “We are incredibly grateful to Mat and the hard work he has put in over the years to get the club to where it is. Whilst we understand Mat’s decision, we are looking forward to his continued involvement in the club. Mat has been invaluable to the club and particularly to us, in navigating the new ownership and business structure. It will be hard to replace him, however we now begin our search.”
