The Illawarra Hawks are committed to giving back to the community that has supported them for over 37 years.
Every player that represents the club is committed to being a positive role model and endorsing a healthy and active lifestyle.
Our athletes embrace the fact that they can have a positive impact on young people’s lives and are passionate about spreading the healthy lifestyle message to primary school students across the Illawarra.
This season the Illawarra Hawks are introducing the ‘Healthy Habits’ program, this initiative aims to increase awareness about the importance of individual health and how to apply healthy habits to their everyday life.
Each Illawarra Hawks player will run a 1-hour seminar combining the Healthy Habits message and basketball skills / games.
What the teachers say?
It was a dynamic, engaging and motivating talk that was relevant to our students. We were impressed that the focus was on ‘Healthy Habits’ and being active in sports, rather than just about basketball. The kids absolutely loved it and we thoroughly recommend other school get on board. Well done to the Illawarra Hawks for their new program – Lauren Peters (Teacher), Gerringong Public School
What the kids think
- It was great!! It was very informative and really interactive which made it fun. It was great to hear stories about what they went through to become an athlete, and to hear that to be successful sometimes you go through tough times – Amelia, Year 5, Gerringong PS
- I liked that they didn’t just talk about their life now; they spoke about their lives as kids. This made it relevant to us as kids – Ella, Year 5, Gerringong PS
- Usually people came to talk to us, but this time it was more inclusive – we loved being able to ask questions and be involved in the drills. Ashleigh, Year 5, Gerringong PS
- I like how they engaged the audience; they not only told us about their lives, but it was information that would help us. Liam, Year 6, Gerringong PS
..and the parents
I am a huge hawks fan and I just wanted to extend a big thank-you to Mitch Norton and Michael Holyfield.
My daughter is a Yr 3 student at Oak Flats Public School and since picking her up from school she has gone on and on about the hawks and basketball.
She says shes going to eat much better, drink lots of water and stay away from screens because they were nice guys haha.
Her favourite she tells me was ‘shorty’ aka Mitch Norton. She is keen to come to games with me now and wants to learn to play.
